SEO: What really mattered in 2019! And what is coming in 2020?…

A new SEO study reveals something new about the individual ranking factors and what you need to know to reach the first page of the search results. Authorityhacker pulled 120,000 random keywords from the Google Keyword Planner for the study, half of which have at least 1,000 searches per month. The study can be summarised as follows:

1. SERP-POSITION

According to the study, the top position is most likely the most relevant result. That means Google will display a result or a well-known brand even if it (tends to) break the ranking factors and SEO rules.

Perhaps a little frustrating for everyone trying to rank higher with their lesser-known blogs and posts. But the study showed another astonishing result here: the success of featured snippets.

Featured snippets are displayed above the organic search results and below the ads. They are there to answer the searcher’s question directly and are also simply called “answer boxes”.

That means the greatest SEO potential lies exactly in this area, because Google is steering more and more towards faster answers and fewer clicks on SERPs.

It is also very striking that all first-page results showed a high average score (over 90 percent) in Google’s Lighthouse audits… A coincidence?… hardly!

2. KEYWORDS

Keywords are and remain extremely important in SEO. Keywords in the content and keyword density play a very large role. Keywords in the URL remain “only” reasonably relevant. The study found that keywords in the meta description as well as the H1 and title elements have a clearly stronger correlation.

Another finding is that longer content does rank higher, but that has nothing to do with the length of the content. It simply offers more room for keywords. In plain terms: more content makes it possible to include more keywords without raising a spam suspicion.

The study also found that it is better to optimise keywords for the overarching topic than for the actual topic it covers. That means the keyword with the highest volume should be used.

3. BACK-LINKS

According to the study, backlinks are still one of the strongest factors for SEO success. Backlinks are references from one domain to another. That is why the basic rule is: link earning instead of link building. In other words, you should produce content good enough that posts are gladly shared.

4. URL

Google already defined HTTPS as a ranking factor in 2014. In 2019, and especially in 2020, there is definitely no getting around it. If a website uses only the HTTPS protocol, it receives a small bonus in Google’s evaluation.

5. PAGE-SPEED

The loading speed of a website was enormously important in 2019 when it comes to user experience and the ranking factor. It can also be the linchpin of your conversion rate, because with a slow loading time (especially on mobile) users definitely bounce faster, that is, they leave your website.

In 2020, page speed will definitely continue to gain in importance.

6. RUMOURS

There were also some SEO rumours in 2019 that turned out to be false. According to the study, these include, for example, that Google would treat high-volume keywords differently. Or that embedded YouTube videos would be preferred over other video platforms. The claim that the length of the URL is a strong ranking factor is also only a rumour.

Takeaway

What now?

Alongside a few technical necessities, a clear trend can be seen in 2019: WRITE FOR THE READER, NOT FOR THE SEARCH ENGINE. And in 2020 especially, it will not only be Google that rewards that.
