Caution, online merchants: the new Packaging Act 2019 is here!

A new year has barely begun, and online merchants once again have news to keep in mind. The new Packaging Act 2019 (Verpackungsgesetz), which has applied since 1 January 2019, had been announced a long time ago. It applies to anyone who, on a commercial basis, places packaging filled with goods on the market for the first time. These so-called “producers” must cover the disposal and recycling of the packaging through participation in a dual system.

The long-awaited main aim is of course to raise the share of recycled packaging materials. All the better that licensing is made as simple as possible for every online merchant.

This is how they can avoid substantial penalties in future through licensing:

  1. apply for participation in a system, for example via Lizenzero, the online shop of the dual system Interseroh
  2. register with the Central Agency (Zentrale Stelle) via LUCID

If you keep these two things in mind, you are definitely on the safe side.
